Joining ceramics with refractory metals such as tantalum requires careful control of the brazing environment and thermal cycle. Unlike conventional metal-to-metal brazing, ceramic-to-metal assemblies require attention to the different thermal and physical properties of the materials to achieve a reliable joint.
This finished ceramic–tantalum assembly was processed using vacuum brazing technology. The controlled vacuum environment provides a clean processing atmosphere and helps minimize oxidation and contamination during the brazing cycle. Precise temperature control and uniform heating are also important for achieving consistent brazing results across the assembly.
Vacuum brazing is well suited to applications where clean joints, dimensional precision, repeatability, and reliable ceramic-to-metal bonding are required. With the appropriate brazing material and process parameters, it can be applied to a wide range of advanced material combinations.
Normantherm vacuum furnaces can be configured for application-specific vacuum brazing processes, providing controlled heating, temperature uniformity, and vacuum conditions for demanding ceramic-to-metal and multi-material joining applications.
